3 helpful tips to avoid Hair Breakage

Why reducing hair breakage is our ultimate goal

When it comes to letting our curls and Afro hair grow healthy, we cannot avoid dealing with the topic of hair breakage. Why is that? No matter what society tells us: our hair grows! Regardless of whether it is type 3 or type 4 hair. (Read more about hair types and curl patterns here)

However, to be sure we are seeing the growth, our hair breakage rate must not be equal to or greater than the hair growth rate. Imagine the hair that has grown in a month breaks off again due to mishandling. Then how to expect hair to grow longer? Exactly, not at all!

That's why today I want to show you 3 tips and tricks that will help you minimize your hair breakage so you can have healthy curls and Afro hair.

1 Moisturize your hair ends

Your hair ends are the most sensitive area of your hair and are therefore the place where hair breakage occurs. If you provide your hair ends with enough moisture and seal them with a rich hair butter or hair oil, you increase the elasticity and resistance of your curls.

The higher the elasticity, the lower the risk of hair breakage. How can this be illustrated?

A dry, raw spaghetti, for example, takes little force to break open, while a pasta cooked in water takes more effort to pull apart.

If you still need products to seal in moisture to increase the elasticity of your curls, feel free to check out our products here: On Haar, hair butter

2 Finger detangle before using a comb or brush

A harsh detangling process is one of the most common reasons for excessive hair breakage. The more often you go through your hair section with a comb or brush, the higher the risk of hair breaking off as a result of the manipulation.

You can counteract this by applying a leave-in in either a creamy or liquid form to make your hair more supple. Then you slowly go through the hair section with your fingers and remove the first knots.

3 Cut off split ends regularly

If we don't say goodbye to our split ends early, they will keep climbing up, damaging and weakening more and more strands of hair. The weaker and more damaged your hair, the more likely it is to break.

Therefore, don't be afraid to grab the hair scissors and cut off the broken ends! It's important to note that you really only trim your ends when split ends are evident.

Skillfully ignore people who tell you to cut your hair in regular intervals of 4-6 weeks or similar cycles. This can result in you shedding more hair than necessary. Everybody´s hair is different! Listen to your own gut feeling!
