Hair Types & Curl Patterns

Your hair type and curl pattern describe the appearance of your hair, which grows naturally from your scalp. The shape of your hair follicles determines your hair type. The more oval the hair follicle, the more slanted the hair follicle sits in the scalp and the curlier the hair.

In general, there are four different curl patterns, distinguished by their degree of curl. The classification is based on the numbers 1 to 4. The higher the number, the curlier the hair:

In most cases it is the case that your hair cannot only be assigned to a specific hair type. There are often multiple hair types in an individual, so this categorization should only be used as a general guide.

That's why you don't have to feel bad about your wonderful afro curls if they can't be clearly assigned to one of the pictures above. I myself have a mix of 4c and 4b curls.
